52 New: #30 New Game: Rockstarr Band Battle
Dirty thirty! My latest "new thing" is a game. Rockstarr Band Battle is the newest game in the Majors household. We are a game family. We love cards, dice, and board games. Over the past year or more of the pandemic, our love of games really paid off. We are semi-professional gamers at this point. Since we aren't a big sports family (our kids never did soccer or Little League or anything like that for an extended period of time), our weekends are generally free. We have no commitments to be at a field or a gym at a certain time. Our lack of organized sports creates room for lots of organized game play.
Since we aren't a part of the organized sports crew, you might assume that we aren't very competitive. One of us isn't (Isom). The other is (me). The boys are usually interested in winning, but the true competitive spirit resides inside me. If you're going to play the game, you might as well win the game!
I like trivia. I like music. I like games. I like friendly competition. Rockstarr Band Battle combines all of these elements to make the perfect Friday night in with friends or family or both. The game can be played with several teams or with each individual playing for themselves. I have played both ways, and each way has its perks.
The goal of the game is to assemble a band before your opponents and then go to the Grammy's with your newly assembled band. It is a virtual stroll down memory lane as each player attempts to guess song titles and the corresponding artist(s). With each first correct response you gather game chips that help you access the cards with the different band members you need to assemble for your ultimate goal of a trip to the Grammy's.
Everyone has a fair chance while playing this game since there are endless artists, songs, and musical genres to choose from. A Spotify playlist for several genres is even included in the game via QR codes. It is a truly new concept---much different than the days of spinning that tired wheel in the game of LIFE or flicking that sad spinner until your fingers are numb for TWISTER.
Another cool new thing about this game---we actually know (in real life) the creator of the game. Over the course of the pandemic, while we were baking tons of Banana Bread, participating in Distance Learning, and eating and eating and eating and drinking...Jamie conceptualized, developed, and created a game. Super impressed. He had an idea, he tested it out with his family and friends and made it happen. I feel very lucky to have been a part of the game play testing process---it's the most fun I've had being part of a focus group
This game is part fantasy (you are playing the part of music producer) and part music trivia (music nerds unite!). This is a game when your knowledge of who sang that popular Grunge song from February 1994 can finally be put to good use. Only know deep cut Country Songs? No problem, there is a playlist and opportunity for you to crush the competition too. Whatever your musical strengths are---80's Pop, 70's Funk, Oldies, R&B, Love songs, Power Ballads...there is a category for every type of music lover (the good and the bad). You may surprise yourself with the level of music knowledge that is tucked away in your brain. The first few bars of your favorite song from seventh grade comes on and immediately you are shouting out the first right answer (Every Rose Has Its Thorn/Poison would be mine by the way).
This game uses modern elements---a streaming music service for your playlist---and the game players music trivia knowledge/however long it takes for the guessing to begin. You've got to be quick to win this game. You listen, you answer correctly, you earn a reward, you start forming your band. It is pretty straight forward with no tricks or complicated rules and instructions---just music, fun, trivia, and competition!
If you are looking for a new take on family game night, I highly recommend ordering Rockstarr Band Battle. Every time you play it will be a new experience. You know I love new experiences. I have never played a game like this one and I'm so glad that this new game, this new experience was created by folks I know. Thanks so much for including me (and my family) in what is now a new favorite game. It rocks.
