52 New: #39 New Cafe: Cafe Kopi

In three short months I will have completed this 52 New Things Journey/Project/Resolution/Adventure.  It has been eye-opening, sprit rejuvenating, health beneficial, filled with growth and learning, comfort zone pushing, and taste buds expanding.  I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.  Today I completed my thirty-ninth new thing.  It was a moms morning out at a new cafe on the windward side of O'ahu.  New dining out experience at Cafe Kopi was this weeks new thing.

Have you ever tried a new restaurant or cafe and walked away thinking it felt like home?  That was my experience at Cafe Kopi.  It was a breath of fresh air.  It was a romantic cup of coffee.  It was a whimsical morning treat.  It was all the things I want in that first sip of morning.  It was literally a rainbow in a cup.  New cafe, new style of coffee, new experience, new place to hang out on a rainy Thursday morning.

Did you know that Kopi means coffee?  Kopi is a traditional coffee of Singapore and Malaysia.  Not only did I try a new type of coffee today, I was transported to a new part of the world.  Kopi is highly caffeinated black coffee.  Kopi is traditionally served with milk and sugar.  The roasting process differs from the typical American coffee roasting process---sugar is added during the roasting process.  This sugar makes a glaze on the beans that in turn gives a distinct flavor to the beans.  When these glazed beans are added to regular beans, magic happens (Coffee beans are the original magic beans).  Magic, the unofficial description of what goes on to create this one of a kind type of coffee/process.  No wonder our lattes from Cafe Kopi were so delicious.  They were infused with magic.

Combine magic and rainbows and you have the recipe for success.  This was my first time trying a rainbow latte.  It was almost too pretty to drink.  From the owner we learned that the rainbow latte is part of a fundraiser.  Proceeds will be donated to LGBTQ organizations providing services that help this community.  Since October is Pride month (in Hawai'i), it is the perfect month to feature the rainbow latte (please stop in and grab your rainbow Joe and support a good cause).

Supporting local.  Sipping rainbows.  Contributing to LGBTQ community programs.  Morning out with friends.  Trying something new.  Coffee.  It was a perfect combination of things I love, just presented in a new way.  In this instance, presentation really was everything.  I smiled every time I looked down at my beautiful rainbow latte.  Pretty. Pretty. Pretty.

If you find yourself in Kailua, (or like us, are willing to drive half-way across the island) I definitely recommend a stop in to Cafe Kopi.  If not for the rainbow latte, then the pastries.  If not for the pastries, then the kind conversation.  If not for the conversation, then the colorful art adorning the walls.  If not for the art, then the impeccable service.  You really can't go wrong with Cafe Kopi.  I can't wait to go back...which will probably be on a weekend soon---since we learned weekends are for Laksa (served Saturdays and Sundays only until sold out).
