Big City Diner

There's no place finer. Bread pudding was the perfect end to our fabulous local style diner dinner on Saturday (that's a mouthful...literally). We met up with the Pommerenks and enjoyed a hilarious waiter, delicious food, and street vendors. Upon entering the restaurant, Gabe and I were summoned by three little kids, a grandma, and who I assume was the young mother of the three kids. She sincerely explained how she had just lost her job (uh, I don't even have one lady), and wondered if we could help support her. I politely told her "Thanks but no thanks." and we continued on inside. I only felt a little guilty. Upon sitting down at our table, Sarah pulls out the above mug. "Oh, what is this? A belated Mother's Day gift?"...her husband had taken pity on the women and kids who were begging us for cash two seconds ago. For the eleven bucks he gave her...he got to take home the beautiful "Eye Candy" mug for his very own. So glad we didn't part with any of our money.
With a start like that, I knew we were in for a fun dinner outing. And then came the second act. Our entertainment for the meal arrived...our waiter JABEZ. First of all, what a terrific name. He was short in stature with spiky black hair, a raspy voice, and a winning smile. He was full of jokes, fist bangs when you ordered something he approved of, and dance moves. He must have done "The Snake", "The Robot", and some combination of the two, at least twenty times in the hour we were there. If all this excitement wasn't enough, our food was AWESOME. I always enjoy the food at Big City but I find it extra enjoyable to go with a former employee---they always know exactly what to order, taking the thinking out of it for me. Nothing better than mindless eating. Fried calamari with wasabi aioli, tofu with ginger and shoyu, vegetarian kim chee fried rice followed by the brownie a la mode and bread budding with haupia creme sauce. There were eight of us, so I'm not really that big a pig. The cooks and our waiter were on fire and we left with grins on our faces and full bellies. Ask for Jabez the next time you go to the Pearlridge Big City Diner. Bring spare change for the lady outside so you can take home a souvenir cup from the experience...and be sure to order dessert!
