The Roommate

The thing about movies is you have to know what you are getting yourself into. If you are prepared to see a drama and it ends up being a comedy, you will walk away feeling robbed, defeated even. It's like with food. You can't go to Taco Bell expecting fine dining...it's just not going to happen. Movies for me are all about setting the right level of expectation. Today's movie for example---I knew it was going to be bad. My expectations were met. Besides expectations, I also think you can rank how much merit a movie will have based on the viewing audience (yeah, yeah, what does that say about me). For instance, yesterday's movie was wonderful. The audience was serious. They were older. They had an air of respectability. Today I was surrounded by high schoolers cutting class. Enough said. I like the show Gossip Girl (also bad...but oh so good). The star of the movie I saw today is from Gossip Girl. That was enough of a draw for me to sit in the theater for two hours. I wanted to see what she had to offer in the updated version of Single White Female. That's what this was---minus Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The two girls entangled in schizophrenia gone bad (kinda like girls gone wild?) are freshmen in college (that got the 18-24 male audience). There are a few drunk and dancing at a frat party scenes. A quick romance between the "good" roommate and a "hot" band guy. Then we get down to the crazy. "Evil, crazy roommate" proceeds to maniacally tear down "good, perfect roommate's" life, bit by bit until finally "good roommate" actually catches on. The Roommate was a bad movie with a predictable plot. It was a chance for audiences to see the evil vampire (Cam Gigandet---crazy name) from Twilight in something other than his small role on The O.C. (check out season 3 and 4 on DVD) The sad thing is, I think his acting was better in Twilight. This movie will be a good DVD rental. Only 16 year old kids, me, and one disabled elderly lady who was escorted in halfway through (random) will actually trek to the theater to see this. It's a good rainy night before Halloween, let's eat candy and stay up late kind of a rental. And will definitely not be earning any awards...except maybe some Kids/Teen Choice ones?
