3 Boys, 3 Days, 3 Hikes

Similar to my tardy Happy New Year wishing efforts, my goal to "get moving" in January...is...well, late. But, the saying isn't a cliche for nothin'! Better late than never. So, this past weekend we walked/hiked/swam every. single. day. Three days. Active lifestyle posers for three days. Three days with three boys.

Our first athletic jaunt was a 3 mile evening walk to Times Supermarket. Bet you didn't see that one coming. My boys who are 4, 12, and recently turned 38 (the hubby), LOVE their fruit. As a treat for walking, instead of lounging on the couch watching bad T.V., they can pick out any fruit their hearts desire. It's a winning trifecta. Walking, fruit picking, distracting them from becoming one with the couch. Who knew my weekend nights would someday involve walking to get fruit. That was Friday.

Saturday morning we woke up ready to hike! We descended upon Moanalua Valley armed with water bottles, snacks, and our hiking shoes. It was a perfect morning for this hike. No rain, slight breeze, and our legs were warmed up from our brisk walk the night before. Added bonus of fruit fueling us.

The Moanalua Valley hike is longer than this family can journey all at once, so we decided to hike in for one hour and then turn around at the hour mark and hike back out. Great plan! At exactly one hour in, the kids started falling apart. One tripped and commenced with a loud, blood curdling cry. I assure you he is fine, if not dramatic. The other decided to get crazy with his walking stick and was forced to surrender his nature toy...back to nature.

Funny how one hour can stretch out like a lifetime...

That was Saturday.

Get moving Sunday was my favorite of the light hiking adventures. Kaena Point can be reached via the Northshore or via the Westside of Oahu. We chose to begin the trail (which is really a very wide, dusty, rocky road along the shoreline) at the Northshore entrance.

This hike, much like the Moanalua Valley hike, is also longer than our family can complete in one outing. We move at a four year old pace, also known as stop every few minutes to pick nose, drink water, chat about random things, and complain.

As was our method the previous day, we hiked for one hour, had a photo shoot, and hiked back to our starting point. This hike was 3.8 miles as compared to 4.5 miles in Moanalua Valley. The lack of shade and more sights to see, slowed our time even further. I recommend doing this hike with or without your family. Be sure to go early to avoid the blazing sun as much as possible and bring lots of water...and then bring one more bottle than that.

The views on this trail range from mountains, to surf, to hidden beach coves, flowers, and at the right time of year (now) whales! Spotting the tail and splash of the whales just off shore was really something to behold. Note to self: gotta get a better camera for that!

Not every weekend will likely look like this  last weekend, but if we can squeeze in walks and hikes between birthday parties, basketball, homework, and other scheduling issues, I think we will be doing a good thing for ourselves. Here's to getting moving the rest of January and the rest of the year.
