They Paved Makapu'u...and other insightful knowledge

My favorite Oahu hike just got better! I have always enjoyed the uphill Makapu'u  Lighthouse...trail, hike, stroll (the name is determined based on your skill and in shape factor).

Not only does this hike (I'm a medium on skill and working on my in shape factor.) grant you stunning views of East Oahu, whale sightings in the spring, and Moloka'i on the horizon, it also allows you to soak up Vitamin D, work your calves, and take amazing selfies (well most people). It's a great hike for kids, dogs, workout enthusiasts, tourists, and tired moms! The Makapu'u hike is 2.6 miles according to our trusty Map My Hike app. Bring water, sunglasses, your camera, wear a hat, and don't push a stroller (you'll thank me later).

Our family makes the drive past Kahala, through Hawaii Kai, and down from Sandy's several times a year. This past Sunday we lucked out with a beautiful day for the hike. Slight breezes, scattered clouds, and no rain were optimum Makapu'u hiking conditions.

I had heard via the coconut wireless that there had recently been improvements made to this already beloved trail. So, of course I took it upon myself to turn a July Sunday into a fact finding mission. Everything I had heard was true. The normally gravelly, rocky, dusty trail has received a facelift. It is smoothly paved. You could drive on it. You could also cook an egg on it. Smooth and hot, just how I like my hiking trails.

Often I hear about money supposedly being allocated for this and that around Oahu, but rarely do I see anything concrete (no pun intended) happening.  Makapu'u was a pleasant surprise. I can see that money was put to good use to make this already perfect hike safer, easier to navigate, and a surface I could cook on if I so desired. 😉

Now, to improve my photo looks. They could definitely take a tip or two from theMakapu'u facelift folks...smooth and hot isn't too much to ask is it?!
